Pirkko’s Pick - Before I Fall |
| by Lauren Oliver | |
Samantha Kingston has it all: looks, popularity, perfect boyfriend. Friday, February 12th, should be just another day in her charmed life. Instead, it turns to be her last. The catch: Samantha still wakes up the next morning (or rather Friday morning again). She ends up living the last day of her life seven times. During those days she eventually discovers the true value of everything she is about to lose. She goes from angry to proactive; she can't change her fate, but maybe she can change the fate of others for the better. This book is categorized for young adults, but I could not put it down. It makes one think, how your actions effect the lives of others. It also clearly shows the devastating effects of bullying. |

Erika's Pick - Legend |
|
| by Marie Lu | |
This is the second book for my "if youloved the Hunger Games..." list. The first was back in the spring when I recommended Divergent by Veronika Roth. Legend is about 2 very smart kids. One is working for the military -June, the other is an outlaw -Day. And June's job is to hunt down Day. She has been told over and over that he is the bad guy, but the more she gets to know the criminal she is after, the more she questions the system she is working for. This book alternates between the perspectives of Day and June, and it would be an equally good choice for teen girls and boys. Or for 31-year-old mothers like myself.

Jeanna's Pick - The Sisters Brothers |
| by Patrick deWitt | |
Hermann Kermit Warm is going to die. The enigmatic and powerful man known only as the Commodore has ordered it, and his henchmen, Eli and Charlie Sisters, will make sure of it. Though Eli doesn't share his brother's appetite for whiskey and killing, he's never known anything else. But their prey isn't an easy mark, and on the road from Oregon City to Warm's gold-mining claim outside Sacramento, Eli begins to question what he does for a living - and whom he does it for. With The Sisters Brothers, Patrick deWitt pays homage to the classic Western, transforming it into an unforgettable comic tour de force. Filled with a remarkable cast of characters - losers, cheaters, and ne'er-do-wells from all stripes of life - and told by a complex and compelling narrator, it is a violent, lustful odyssey through the underworld of the 1850s frontier that beautifully captures the humour, melancholy, and grit of the Old West and two brothers bound by blood, violence, and love. |

| Loretta's Pick - Wildflower Hill | |

If you liked Kate Morthon's Forgotten Garden you will love this book. The story starts in depression times in Glasgow where Beattie works at a agambling club to make ends meet. She finds herself pregnant by someone else's husband and they run off to Tasmania. She finds hardship living with the man she loves, but who gambles away his wages and can't support his family. She leaves and starts a new life - eventually marries and has 2 children and a granddaughter, Emma. Emma is a ballerina who has an accident and is forced to leave her profession. She goes hom to Tasmania and finds that her grandma has left her farm and lots of boxes of memories. In these boxes she finds out about another life the grandmother had that the family didn't know about. A touching story about friendship, family values, and acceptance. |
